Aquaman is a 2018 American superhero film starring Jason Momoa. There is a specific scene in the movie were the audience sees a palace, in an underwater city called Atlantis. This particular scene, motivated me to explore the world below us. I had never fully realized just how many different constructions had been built under the water. For example, the undersea data cables constructed by network giants such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and so on.

Significantly, the underwater cables are semi-visible. These cables are used to transfer digital data to far reaching corners of the earth. However, this is dependent on whether a long cable is specifically used in order to transfer digital data all the way from the U.S. to Asia to achieve international communications. However, in all honesty, we are barely aware that undersea cables exist unless we are directly informed of these cables. Since the start of 2020, the U.S. has declared that they will update the cables in order to ascertain lightning-fast data speeds. This is a necessary action to achieve data transferring across the world which will usher in the 5G era.

Prior to 2020, a high-capacity of undersea data cables have been used to maintain the connection between the U.S. and HK in the continent of Asia. Following a statement made by the U.S. justice department on June 17th 2020, a claim was made that Taiwan and the Philippines would replace the HK underwater data connection cable program. So it is obvious that the sole reason for bypassing HK is mainly to avoid jeopardizing the national security and law enforcement interests of the United States through Chinese authority.

At the start of 2020, Mark Zuckerberg warned of security issues related to the use of Chinese applications. In the era of IoT (the internet of things), digital data is useful analytical information provided for customers to generate either new products or new business models. Those elements require that the internet giants mentioned before need to team up with the White House, in order to protect their most valuable assets to be prepared for what the future holds.
