Are you struggling with the question “should I quit my job?” When this thought comes to mind, most people would normally weigh the pros and cons to find out which side tips the scale before making a decision. The majority of people would probably resign if the scale tipped too low. On the other hand, based on the current pandemic we are experiencing, this is problem with no solution. But let’s start by tackling this situation head on. Market diversity is not something that we can control. As a result, the best thing we can do is just try to be proactive and whilst preparing for a rainy day.

A toxic work environment is definitely something that can drive us crazy, and it is also emotionally and physically unhealthy. Although we can come up with countless reasons to turn in our resignation, there are still numerous reasons why we need to batten down the hatches and let the storm ride out. The crux of the matter is that not everyone can just walk away from their job, whenever they want to, for fear of financial issues, or even a fear of change. As such, here are a few guidelines to prevent you from regretting your future options.

A. Do you have one foot out the door just because of co-worker disagreements or even dissatisfaction with your company? Don’t make an unwise call to leave on a whim because you could regret it later on.

Leaving means a fresh start, but you would also need to adapt to a new working environment as well focus on building new relationships. So you need to figure out the exact reason for leaving to ensure that you won’t regret your decision. For example, what are some things that make you feel uncomfortable? It could be an overload of tasks or even tense co-working relationships? If your reasons follow this line of thinking then simply talking to your supervisor might be the solution you were looking for, you could adjust your task load or even transfer to a different department.

B. Set a deadline.

Setting a deadline is vital especially if you are planning to resign. This gives you a timeframe to work with, so instead of wasting time and energy, having a visible deadline could help you arrange your affairs while preparing to offer your resignation. On the other hand, the nervousness you feel might help you be motivated to refresh your resume in case something pops up. This could be the escape plan you need.

C. Be aware of resigning before you have secured a stable position for yourself, because you still need an income to support you.

Everyone needs to earn an income to maintain their way of life and we don’t know how long it will take to find another job. So, it is reasonable to conclude that we need to have enough savings for a minimum of six months or even longer if possible, to keep going until the right position presents itself. Job-hunting also causes anxiety, so the best treatment is to have a calming tranquilizer in the form of money.

People who are in a position of seniority may also take it upon themselves to guide you with regard to when you quit your job or even how you quit your job. There is nothing wrong with accepting this kind of guidance, but remember that each person as an individual needs to make decisions based on their current life course and as such the suggestions of others might not fit into your world as well as it does in their. Therefore, instead of offering you a fish so to speak, I aim to help you learn how to fish, through my advice and I hope these suggestions can walk you through the decision-making you may have to face sooner or later.
